“Working with Thuy has been life changing for me.

As a result of a car accident and years of long distance running, I struggled for a very long time with serious lower back pain (disc degeneration, SI joint dysfunction). It was so challenging to be active, keep up with my young son, or stay on my feet all day at work. After years of trying so many remedies like orthopedic doctors, cortisone shots, and physical therapy, I thought I was destined to be in pain and miss out on being active and doing activities I enjoy. Practicing Pilates with Thuy has changed all of that for me.

“I started taking Pilates to strengthen my muscles (especially core) hoping that I could completely avoid some of the problems my aging parents (in their 90’s) and many of my friends who are my age or younger are experiencing. From the beginning I loved it, I left class feeling energized and excited to continue classes for the long term. After a couple of weeks of classes I began taking personal classes with Thuy Burritt. During her regular classes I was very impressed with how detailed her instructions were and her explanations of how each movement related to the totality of our body’s posture and function. Luckily, I have no injuries but I am in the senior citizen category and wanted Thuy to help me fine tune some of the exercises that were more difficult for me. Thuy noticed that I had a postural kyphosis that I was not aware of and began helping me to gradually correct this. Thuy taught me ways to modify some movements that would allow me to benefit without causing injury. Having a one on one personal class with Thuy was the highlight of my week for the many weeks we worked together. Her knowledge of anatomy and Pilates is quite evident, and she is creatively diverse always flexible to change the routine so there is no “routine”. She pays careful attention to how we are moving and gently “corrects” or provides a modification. Thuy is my Pilates “rock star”. I have been taking Pilates classes for six months and I am definitely stronger and more conscious of my posture (engaging my core purposefully). I am a serious gardener and this spring I have been shocked at the increase in my strength and endurance from last spring and of course. I owe it all to Pilates. “On January 1st this year I sustained a bad spinal injury to my back after a jump from a rock into the water, I fractured T12 and had a burst vertebrae at L1 with some compression of the spinal cord. I have two Titanium rods and four Pedicular screw in situ from T11 to L1. I was very lucky to escape paralysis but knew I had to surrender to a long recovery.

My recovery went very well and four months after my operation I was ready physically and psychologically for overall bodywork. I chose to do a private class weekly with Thuy for this work.

Thuy Burritt’s skills and professional knowledge are obvious from the outset, in assessing my overall range of movement, all the time making sure I was feeling comfortable and not in any discomfort, we worked within my pain free range. This gave me great confidence in this part of my recovery. I actually felt better from the start of this overall body strengthening and stretching. Within a few short weeks I felt my strength recover and was becoming more flexible. I am able to do the exercises to an ability I did not think would be possible. It is challenging but so rewarding. I go away feeling pretty chuffed with myself and the routine she has put me through on the Reformer.

Thuy herself is an inspiration in her professional approach, her knowledge of the body, posture, alignment as well as her physical ability and strength. “Pilates had never been on my fitness agenda even though colleagues and friends had raved about the benefits. I perceived it as too slow and maybe not enough adrenaline rush. I was mistaken. I started Pilates with Thuy just over a year ago when I had a foot injury which put an end to my running. I joined the class with some apprehension but that soon dissipated when I was in Thuy’s care. Her ever so watchful eyes made sure that my injury was not intensified but rather given time to heal.

I’ve learned so much about my body over this time and how to treat it with care and respect. Thuy has taught me to challenge myself in Pilates and as I have grown stronger she has pushed a little more. “… When I left the UK to work in the UAE I didn’t attend a Pilates class for some time. However, it became apparent that that my body was missing my regular sessions so I needed to find another class to attend. I found Thuy’s Pilates studio but the time of the classes did not fit in with my working day. I contacted Thuy who was prepared to change the times of the sessions to accommodate me and so in April 2013 I found myself back to attending 2 Pilates sessions a week and life was just perfect once again.
The advantages of attending a session with Thuy is that the group is never more than 12 people but the class size is usually about 8 or 9 people. This allows for a very personal service where Thuy will keep her eye on you to make sure that everything is properly aligned. She will also adjust your arms, legs, ribs or head, if necessary, to make sure that you are in the correct position to get the maximum benefit. Every now and again I may pull a muscle or put something out and Thuy is always there to help and give advice and show you things to help alleviate the situation. Pilates isn’t something that you can just dip in and out of; it becomes a lifestyle choice and practiced regularly it enhances your quality of life. Not only that but the class is great fun and I have met a good group of people and we sometimes socialise at times other than in the class.”
